Michael & Grace | Ben Ean Wedding in the Hunter Valley

Michael & Grace | Ben Ean Wedding in the Hunter Valley

Michael and Grace’s wedding was all about family, connection and going with the flow — even when the weather had other plans.

From the very start of the day, it was clear how close these two are with their families. Both sets of parents were present during wedding preparations, sharing in the excitement and setting the tone for a day that felt warm, personal and genuinely relaxed.

Getting Ready at Oaks Cypress Lakes

Michael and Grace chose to get ready at Oaks Cypress Lakes Resort, using the onsite accommodation overlooking the Broken Back mountain range. Cypress Lakes is one of those locations that offers endless variety for photos — manicured golf greens, vineyard views, accommodation spaces and that sweeping mountain backdrop.

That flexibility allowed us to create a mix of images that felt perfectly suited to them, without having to travel far or rush the morning. From a logistics point of view, it was also ideal — Cypress Lakes is just a two-minute drive from Ben Ean, making the transition from prep to ceremony seamless.

Why Ben Ean Is One of the Most Sought-After Hunter Valley Wedding Venues

Ben Ean sits right in the heart of the Hunter Valley and is one of the region’s most recognisable and sought-after wedding venues. Formerly known as Lindeman’s Estate, it carries a beautiful sense of history alongside its rustic charm and warmth.

It’s a venue that works beautifully for couples wanting a relaxed, informal celebration — but with the ability to be styled into something more polished when needed. That versatility made it the perfect fit for Michael and Grace.

And thanks to the not-so-friendly weather, we were able to create some seriously dark, moody imagery that gave the day an extra layer of drama.

Ceremony Locations at Ben Ean Wedding Venue

One of the things I love most about Ben Ean is the range of ceremony options available onsite — each with a very different feel.

  • The Fig Tree, positioned high on the property, offers sweeping views and is often a favourite for couples drawn to epic scenery.

  • The Garden Terrace, closer to the main building, is a popular ceremony and canapé space.

  • The Heritage-Listed Courtyard provides a warm, rustic and weather-proof option, with a retractable roof that can be opened or closed depending on conditions.

  • And finally, just behind the Garden Terrace, is another beautiful open-air spot — the location Michael and Grace chose to exchange their vows.

A Ceremony Filled with Music, Emotion and Stormy Skies

Michael and Grace made their way to the ceremony to join their loved ones, with a family friend singing Grace down the aisle — a moment that immediately set an emotional tone.

The ceremony styling by Morpeth Flower Gallery was absolutely spot on, with florals and a gorgeous arbour that framed the space beautifully.

It became obvious early in the day that the weather wasn’t going to be kind. But honestly? Stormy wedding days often deliver some of the most powerful imagery — and this one did not disappoint. The clouds rolled in thick and dramatic, constantly shifting and evolving.

After the ceremony, we worked through family photos before heading up the hill for portraits under the giant fig tree, in the vines and among the long grass. I love venues that allow for so much variety without having to go anywhere else — Ben Ean absolutely delivers on that front.

Reception in the Heritage-Listed Courtyard

Following portraits, we made our way to the Heritage-Listed Courtyard for the reception. This space is one of Ben Ean’s standout features — full of rustic charm, genuine warmth and character you won’t find anywhere else in the Hunter Valley.

The courtyard comfortably seats up to 400 guests, making it spacious without losing intimacy. The reception was catered by Ben Ean’s award-winning onsite restaurant, Baume, and the atmosphere inside was relaxed, welcoming and full of anticipation.

When the Storm Took Over (In the Best Way)

Just as speeches were about to begin, a massive storm front rolled in. We hit pause, grabbed Michael and Grace, and ran outside for a few more portraits before the rain hit.

Sometimes you miss a sunset — but when the trade-off is a wall of dark, rolling storm clouds moving across the valley, it’s more than worth it. Michael and Grace took it all in stride, completely unfazed and happy to roll with whatever the day threw at them.

We made it back inside just in time for a torrential downpour.

Later in the evening, the weather eased enough for us to sneak back outside to the Garden Terrace for some night portraits. With festoon lights strung across reclaimed timber beams and sandstone garden beds lining the space, it was the perfect setting. Michael and Grace shared a quiet dance while I hid in the bushes (standard), capturing the moment as it naturally unfolded.

Final Thoughts

Michael and Grace’s flexibility, calm energy and trust in the process allowed the day to unfold beautifully — weather and all. Their willingness to adapt is exactly what made the images so strong and the experience so enjoyable.

Ben Ean is a venue that truly shines when couples embrace its character and let the day flow. This wedding was the perfect example of that.
