Laura & Adam | King Edward Park Wedding, Newcastle

An Intimate Inner-City Wedding at King Edward Park

Laura and Adam’s King Edward Park wedding in Newcastle was a complete shift from their original plans — and a perfect example of how changing direction can lead to something incredibly meaningful.

What was once set to be a larger Hunter Valley celebration at Dark Horse Vineyard became a small, intimate elopement-style wedding in the heart of Newcastle CBD. Instead of rolling vineyards and long guest lists, they chose cliffs, ocean views and a ceremony that focused purely on the two of them.

A Simple Ceremony in the Rotunda

The ceremony took place at the King Edward Park rotunda, with just Laura and Adam, a couple of close friends as witnesses, their celebrant, and me quietly documenting it all.

King Edward Park is one of Newcastle’s most iconic ceremony locations. Perched above the coastline, it offers sweeping ocean views, historic charm and a sense of calm despite being so close to the city.

On the day, the weather played nice for the ceremony — sunshine, clear skies and perfect conditions as they exchanged vows. It felt effortless and grounded, exactly the tone they were hoping for.

Weather Turns — And We Leaned Into It

Not long after the ceremony, the conditions began to shift. As we moved into portraits around the gardens at King Edward Park, dark clouds rolled in and rain followed soon after.

We made a quick dash back to the cars as the coast was blanketed in heavy cloud. But just as quickly as it arrived, the rain eased — and a rainbow appeared.

Rather than waiting it out, we embraced the moment and headed up to Shepherds Hill, making the most of the moody skies and changing light.

Exploring Newcastle for Portraits

From there, we moved into the city to find shelter and variety, using locations I know work beautifully in all conditions.

We photographed around:

  • The Old Newcastle Train Station

  • Bolton Street and its distinctive architecture

  • Hunter Street

  • Several tucked-away CBD locations that offered texture, character and cover from the rain

One of the most powerful moments of the day happened outside an old bank building in the city. Sheltered beneath towering ornamental doors, Laura and Adam read their personal vows to each other.

Despite the rain, traffic and wild weather around us, everything seemed to fall quiet. The emotion, vulnerability and openness in that moment made it incredibly special to witness — and to document.

Final Thoughts

Laura and Adam’s King Edward Park wedding wasn’t traditional — and that was the point.

It was intimate, intentional and stripped back to what mattered most. The changing weather, dramatic skies and iconic Newcastle locations allowed us to create a collection of images that felt raw, honest and completely reflective of them.

A perfect reminder that weddings don’t need “all the stuff” to be meaningful — just connection, presence and a willingness to lean into the moment.
