A Winter Wedding at Margan Wines, Hunter Valley
Liv and Ben’s winter wedding at Margan Wines & Restaurant in Broke was thoughtful, relaxed and beautifully intentional — a day that flowed effortlessly and reflected who they are as a couple.
Set in one of the Hunter Valley’s oldest wine-making regions, Margan is a family-owned venue known for its award-winning food, estate-grown produce and sweeping views across the Broke mountain range. I’ve photographed several weddings at Margan over the years, and one of the things I love most about working here is the variety it offers. From the gardens and architecture to the surrounding landscape, it’s a venue that allows for a wide range of imagery without ever feeling repetitive.
Getting Ready at Talits Estate
Liv and Ben chose to get ready at Talits Estate, just a short drive from Margan — and honestly, they couldn’t have picked a better prep location.
Keeping prep close to the ceremony location makes a huge difference to the flow of the day. There’s no rushing, no traffic stress, and more time for what actually matters. From a photography perspective, it also means less time spent in cars and more time capturing genuine moments.
Talits Estate is a French provincial farmhouse dream. Inside and out, it’s full of character, light and texture. Bride prep took place in one part of the home, groom prep in another, allowing Liv and Ben to share the experience with their closest friends and family while still keeping things calm and relaxed. They spent the day before and the morning of their wedding enjoying good food, Hunter Valley wine and the quiet excitement that comes with knowing what’s ahead.
A First Look Before the Ceremony
Before heading to Margan, Liv and Ben chose to do a first look in the gardens at Talits Estate.
First looks are such a great option if you want to keep that emotional moment private — just the two of you (and the photographer quietly doing their thing). It also helps ease nerves, especially if you’re not keen on crying in front of a crowd. From a timeline perspective, it freed up time later in the day and allowed us to knock over some bridal party and family photos early.
After portraits and family photos, we made the short drive to Margan for the ceremony.
Ceremony at Margan Wines
Liv and Ben’s ceremony took place in Margan’s courtyard, surrounded by the venue’s gardens and framed by the Broke mountain range.
They were married by Wed by Jade, and if you’re looking for a celebrant who’s confident, relaxed and completely in control of the flow, Jade is exactly that. As a musician and professional MC, she brings a natural rhythm to ceremonies — no awkward pauses, no forced moments, just a smooth, genuine experience.
Following the ceremony, guests formed a petal tunnel and showered Liv and Ben as they made their way through — one of those moments that feels just as joyful as it looks.
Sunset Photos & Winter Light in Broke
After a few additional family photos, we spent some time capturing couple portraits around Margan as the sun dipped behind the mountains.
Winter in the Hunter Valley means earlier sunsets, and at Margan in particular, the surrounding mountain range causes the light to drop sooner than you might expect. Because we’d already taken advantage of the first look earlier in the day, we had the flexibility to work with the light rather than rush against it — something I always encourage couples to consider when planning winter weddings in this region.
Reception & Celebrations
Canapés kicked off with live music by Jerome O’Connor, who later expanded into his three-piece band, Master Blaster, for the evening. Jerome has a knack for reading the room, and before long the dance floor was packed.
Reception catering was handled by Margan Restaurant, and it’s easy to see why they’re a hatted venue with a long list of awards. Almost everything served is grown onsite, and the quality speaks for itself — food that feels thoughtful, seasonal and genuinely special.
Liv and Ben’s reception was relaxed, full of laughter and beautifully paced. Everything about the day felt considered without being over-styled, and the emotion in their photos reflects that.
Final Thoughts
Liv and Ben’s Margan Wines wedding is a perfect example of how good planning, a strong timeline and a venue that truly suits your style can elevate the entire experience.
Their day flowed effortlessly, felt deeply personal, and resulted in a gallery full of real moments — the kind you’ll want to revisit for years to come.
