Amber & Josh | Merewether Surfhouse Wedding, Newcastle

Amber & Josh’s Merewether Surfhouse wedding was relaxed, coastal and full of trust — the kind of day where everything flows naturally and the photos take care of themselves.

I first met Amber a few years earlier when she was a bridesmaid at another wedding I was photographing. That day involved extreme heat, high humidity and a last-minute makeup rescue (long story short: a few phone calls, one incredible makeup artist, and a calm solution later — crisis averted). From that moment on, Amber knew exactly who she wanted photographing her own wedding.

Fast forward to a warm February afternoon in Newcastle.

A Ceremony Under the Trees at King Edward Park

Amber & Josh tied the knot beneath the trees at King Edward Park — one of Newcastle’s most iconic ceremony locations. The light was soft, the ocean breeze kept things comfortable, and the setting felt intimate without being enclosed.

After the ceremony, we worked through family photos in the park before heading off for portraits nearby. These two were adventurous and completely trusting, which opened the door to some incredible locations.

Coastal Portraits & Newcastle Texture

Our first stop was the cliffside overlooking the Bogey Hole — all rugged textures, earthy tones and big coastal energy. Amber & Josh didn’t hesitate as we carefully made our way along the ledge, taking in the view and leaning into the moment.

From there, we moved through the upper areas of the park, capturing a mix of relaxed portraits and drone imagery with licensed operator Brad from GMTMT. Having multiple vantage points added real depth to their gallery and showcased Newcastle’s coastline beautifully.

Merewether Surfhouse Reception

With the reception taking place at Merewether Surfhouse, we made the most of the surrounding walking trails for portraits before guests arrived. Hickson Street Lookout turned out to be the perfect spot — sheltered from the wind, softly lit and framed by muted coastal greens. Ideal for bridal party photos without fighting harsh light.

As the evening rolled in, we returned to Merewether Surfhouse for the reception. Music was handled by none other than Howard Shearman — a true crowd favourite in the Newcastle wedding scene — and the energy inside built quickly.

Sunset at Merewether Ocean Baths

Later in the evening, we slipped outside with Amber & Josh for sunset photos at Merewether Ocean Baths. Dreamy cloud cover paired with waves crashing along the coastline created a moody, cinematic backdrop — the kind you can’t plan, only embrace.

After sunset, it was back inside for their first dance and a packed dancefloor to finish the night exactly how it should end.

Final Thoughts

Amber & Josh’s wedding was a perfect example of what happens when couples trust the process, choose locations that suit them, and focus on enjoying the day rather than controlling it.

Newcastle’s coastline always delivers — and this one absolutely did.

If you’re planning a Merewether Surfhouse wedding or a coastal celebration in Newcastle, this venue offers the perfect balance of scenery, accessibility and atmosphere.
