A Spontaneous Sunset Shoot in Sydney’s The Rocks

I was in Sydney for a short wedding coverage at the Pyrmont Registry (the couple were getting ready next door at The Star), and afterwards I found myself with a rare free evening. So I threw a little call-out on Instagram: “Anyone around Sydney keen for a spontaneous sunset engagement shoot?”

A few legends replied, but Marlie & Pat were the first — and absolutely the most excited. These two are getting married at Peppers Creek Chapel in the Hunter Valley next year, so this was the perfect warm-up session before their big day. A chance to catch up, shake off any camera nerves and create something fun together.

If you love the vibe of natural, candid sessions like this, you might enjoy exploring my relaxed wedding photography across NSW — it’s the exact same philosophy I bring to every shoot.

We met at Circular Quay and wandered slowly toward The Rocks — one of Sydney’s most iconic pockets. Sandstone lanes, hidden corners, wine bars, boutique shops, the harbour on one side and historic architecture on the other… it’s a photographer’s playground.

We moved through Argyle Stairs, down to Hickson Rd Reserve with views back to the Opera House, past the MCA, and into a tiny garden pocket tucked between George St and the harbour. And like every great shoot, we found half the best spots simply by exploring and saying “Ooh, stop here!”

As the sun dipped behind the Harbour Bridge, the light softened and the whole place took on that dreamy dusk glow that Sydney does so well. Marlie & Pat arrived a little nervous — unsure about posing or what to do with their hands (classic). But within minutes they were laughing, playing, totally relaxed and just being themselves.

By the end of the session, they were surprised by how easy and fun it felt.
The photos? Pure gold. Warm, romantic, effortless — everything an engagement shoot should be.

If you're planning your own engagement session and want to know what it costs or what’s included, here’s a look at my engagement session pricing and packages — super simple, flexible and designed to keep things easy.

Their Testimonial (And Why I Loved This Shoot)

“We recently had an engagement shoot with Bryce following a very strong recommendation from our friends (whose wedding he photographed). To put it plainly, we ADORE Bryce.

He is so insanely talented and put us at such ease. My fiancé and I are not major PDA people and are awkward at our very best. However, Bryce made the magic happen. Not only did it feel like we were hanging out with an old friend, but his vision for these photographs was impeccable. We have recently booked him for our wedding and hope he's around for any future births, deaths and marriages! (Is this an option, Bryce?)

Bryce is not only a photographer but also a newfound friend, comedian, and all-around great guy.”

Honestly… speechless. Couples like these remind me exactly why I love what I do.

If you're new here, hi — I’m Bryce, a Hunter Valley & Newcastle photographer who travels across NSW capturing relaxed, real moments for couples just like these two.
